Biological Science Technician (Logistics)

The National Park Service Sierra Nevada Network Inventory & Monitoring Program is seeking a biological science technician to support the planning, logistics, operations, and data management for a wide variety of biological and natural resource monitoring projects. Project Leads, monitoring protocols, and associated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provide detailed guidance on many aspects of the work, but the position is frequently required to use independent judgment to help support project goals and needs to possess a solid understanding of field operations in large wilderness or back country settings. The majority of work will take place in an office setting, though some work may occur in remote, back country locations with overnight camping and travel required. This position will be supervised by the network's program manager. Major Duties consist of:
Provides logistical support (e.g., arranging vehicles, campsites, and back country caches, and managing equipment and supplies) and solves logistical or operational problems within the scope of the incumbent's authority. Works in a team environment, interacting regularly with network staff, park staff, and cooperators to support program logistics, safety, and communication needs. Operates, tracks, and maintains field gear and sampling equipment (e.g., camping equipment, cameras, communication devises, etc.) and works with network staff to order replacement parts, new equipment, and additional supplies when necessary. Supports management of collected field data, including organizing digital files (both tabular and spatial), creating meta data, and documenting and cataloging photographs. Uses GIS tools to perform tasks related to geoprocessing and manipulation of spatial data to create field maps and document and archive data collected on multiple GPS units. Physical Demands:
The work is a mixture of sedentary/indoor tasks and field work in mountainous terrain. When indoors there will be some walking; standing, bending, carrying of moderately heavy items such as boxes, equipment, gear, etc. The employee may occasionally perform backcountry travel (including overnight camping) on trips ranging from 1-10 days in length that requires the incumbent carry a heavy backpack and hike over rough, uneven, rocky terrain or slippery surfaces at elevations from 500 ft to over 10,000 ft and in temperatures from 20F to over l00F. Work requires the operation of a motor vehicle on steep mountainous roads. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster. Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
planning and providing logistical and operational support for natural resource monitoring programs, leading field crews in remote back-country settings, knowledge of common sampling techniques used for biological resource sampling, experience using established protocols and standard scientific equipment to conduct long-term monitoring, and experience with database management activities including manipulating and organizing digital files, creating metadata, and using GIS tools to support natural resource monitoring planning, implementation, and data processing. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education leading towards a Master's Degree with a major study in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as wildlife management, biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as varies. No additional credit is given for overtime. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
