Maintenance Mechanic

Major Duties include:
Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities. Constructs storage areas, workrooms, and offices within existing buildings including framework, rafters, joists, insulation, sheet rock, paneling, doors, windows, and flooring. Builds small structures and replaces deteriorated sections of existing structures. Installs exterior siding and roofing. Installs interior and exterior trim materials. Constructs and installs cabinets and builds countertops utilizing quartz or wood. Installs floor coverings such as tile, linoleum, and carpet. Matches or creates exact reproductions of various components of historic buildings and fixtures. Plans, computes, and lays out projects and identifies material needs. Works from complex instructions, blueprints, sketches and building codes. Operates various carpentry equipment and tools (e.g., routers. band and scroll saws, and drill presses. etc.) and is able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance. Also operates various power and hand tools such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shapers, sanders, power activated nail guns, combustion type saws, etc. Cuts bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints and applies plastic laminates to wood and other surfaces on counter tops, cabinets, desk tops, and tables. Performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion. Paints, decorates, and refinishes a variety of interior and exterior surfaces of offices and buildings, family dwellings, other structures, finishing, and equipment. Completes all painting, varnishing, etc. functions to include marbling, graining, speckling, tinting and toning of paint, and matching existing colors. Maintains, constructs, repairs, and alters a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, and other related materials such as bridges, bridge abutments, retaining walls, head wall structures, smokestacks, decorative walls, walkways, exhibit bases, patios, foundations, fireplaces, manholes, catch basins, etc. Cuts, fits, and lays brick, block, and native stone. Repair work consists of removing broken or damaged material and replacing with new. New work is planned and laid out from the beginning. Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats. Installs or repairs electrical systems required in the construction or maintenance of family housing units, buildings, quarters, offices, or shops. Performs various plumbing tasks (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, etc). To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factor:
Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic WG-4749-09, without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT). Experience in or training that demonstrates ability to perform journeyman maintenance mechanic tasks in at least 3 of the following trades:
1) carpentry tasks (replace damaged pieces of framework or flooring, build shelves and storage cabinets, select lumber and measure needed materials from stock, etc.). 2) roofing tasks (repair leaks in shingled roofs, tear off and replace asphalt composition and cedar shingles, install underlayment, cut and install sheathing, cut and replace rafters, install pre-made flashings. 3) plumbing tasks (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, etc.). 4) masonry tasks ( constructs and repairs surfaces of brick, block, stone for bridges, retaining walls, walkways, foundations, etc. cuts, fits and lasys brick, block and native stone). Use of hand and power tools associated with these 3 trades. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
